Wood Badge is Scouting’s premier training program for adult Scout leaders.
It was founded by Lord Baden Powell in 1919 to ensure Scout leaders were properly trained. Since then, Wood Badge has provided advanced leadership training to thousands of
Scout leaders around the world.
Reflecting the best of more than a century of Scouting experience,
Wood Badge builds upon the best traditions of the Boy Scouts of America.
The five-day course draws upon current leadership models both within and beyond
Scouting to present the latest in leadership theory and team development.
Participants have the opportunity to grow and refine their leadership skills,
both in Scouting and in their everyday lives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to attend all 5 days?
Yes, participation for the complete duration of the course is required in order to complete the in-person training portion of Wood Badge.
What is included in the $285 fee?
The registration fee includes all meal, snacks, resources, supplies, course t-shirt and hat. Once you have completed the training and your ticket, you will receive your Wood Badge beads, neckerchief, slide, and completion certificate.
Are there scholarships available?
Often times Packs, Troops or Crews will cover part or all of the cost of the training- check with your unit’s committee to see if this is an option. Your unit’s Chartered Organization may provide financial assistance as well. Some employers and civic groups have scholarships available for their employees or members to take Leadership Development training and Wood Badge is often recognized to be a part of that category. An informational flyer that you can use to share with your employer, unit committee, chartered organization or civic group can be found by clicking here (ß that will have link to the info sheet we prepared earlier)
How hard is the ticket?
The Ticket is the project that you complete within 18 months of the second weekend of the course. It is designed to include 5 smaller facets of an overall vision you have to improve Scouting through your role(s). With the help of Troop Guides and other staff members, you will have the opportunity to write your ticket. It is something that should be a little outside of your normal Scouting role, but not an overwhelming challenge. Please do not stress over your ticket- we promise it will be a manageable element of your Wood Badge experience!
