The Trainer’s Corner

Scouting America trainers should be confident, enthusiastic, and good communicators. They should also be able to create a learning environment where participants feel comfortable taking risks.

Tips for Trainers:

  • Be a role model: Dress in a complete uniform and behave as a Scouting leader.
  • Communicate clearly: Explain tasks and procedures clearly, and listen actively.
  • Build rapport: Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and handle conflict well.
  • Be organized: Manage time and balance responsibilities.
  • Educate, don’t instruct: Encourage participants to learn for themselves.
  • Know your audience: Make sure training is specific to your audience.
  • Use the EDGE method: Explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable.
  • Consider self-evaluations: Distribute forms for participants to fill out during breaks.

Training Goals

The goal of Scouting America training is to help participants develop skills and become confident leaders. Trained leaders contribute to the quality of programs, youth tenure, and safety.
